What is a Direct-Drive Boat?
A direct-drive boat is powered by a center mounted engine, propeller and gearbox. In a “direct-drive” boat, the engine faces the bow with a transmission connected to the rear of the engine. The transmission is connected to a propeller shaft mounted under the boat. Left: A typical direct-drive boat
Complete Boat Service – Direct-Drive
- Connect boat to flushing system
- Check power steering fluid level if applicable
- Check transmission fluid level if applicable
- Check engine oil level
- Check all belts and hoses for wear and alignment
- Start engine and check all systems for proper operation
- Check all gauges for proper operation
- Check shifter remote control for proper function
- Inspect battery connections and charge as necessary
- Check electrical switches and boat lighting for proper operation
- Check and spin all wheels for worn bearings and check for defective tires
- Check air pressure in all tires and correct as necessary
- Test all trailer lighting
- Inspect trailer actuator/coupler
- Check trailer brake fluid level and correct as necessary
- Grease trailer bearing protectors if applicable
- Remove and replace engine oil
- Remove and replace engine oil filter
- Remove and replace spark plugs
- Remove and replace distributor cap and distributor rotor if applicable
- Remove and replace water separating fuel filter(s) and all other fuel filters if applicable
- Remove, rebuild and reinstall sea pump impeller
- Inspect and clean out sea strainers if applicable or necessary
- Check fuel system and fuel pump(s) for leaks or wear
- Check complete exhaust system for leaks
- Remove, clean flame arrestor/air filter and reinstall
- Check battery mounts for security
- Inspect overall rigging for safety
- Inspect propeller, strut, prop shaft and strut bushing
- Check propeller torque
- Check transmission level
- Check prop shaft seal and grease if applicable
- Check rudder stuffing box and grease if applicable
- Grease all zerk fittings
- Check all fluid levels and requirements
- Check engine mounts for tightness
- Check driveline bolts and nuts for security
- Check trim tabs/cavitation plates for security and proper operation
- Check shift mechanism/assembly
- Start engine and check for leaks
- Check all systems for proper operation
- Check carb/throttle body and adjust if necessary or applicable
- Check and adjust dwell, timing if necessary or applicable
- Perform full EFI computer scan
- Check for trouble codes
- Clear codes if necessary, ensure all sensors are operating properly and no codes return
- Degrease bilge area
- Check engine oil level and top off as necessary
- Reinstall all seats, bases, actuators and hatch if necessary
- Reinstall all customer belongings
- Close hatch
- Shut off battery switch if applicable
- Prepare boat for customer retrieval
- Recover boat if necessary
Basic Service
- Check all belts and hoses for wear and alignment
- Start engine and check all systems for operation
- Check all gauges for proper operation
- Check shifter remote control for proper function
- Inspect battery connections
- Remove and replace engine oil
- Remove and replace engine oil filter
- Remove, rebuild and reinstall sea pump impeller
- Remove, clean flame arrestor/air filter and reinstall
- Inspect propeller, strut, prop shaft and strut bushing
- Check transmission level
- Check rudder stuffing box and grease if applicable
- Grease all zerk fittings
- Check fluid levels and requirements
- Check shift mechanism/assembly
- Start engine and check for leaks
- Check systems for proper operation
- Degrease bilge area
- Check engine oil level and top off as necessary
Engine Oil Only
- Remove and replace engine oil
- Remove and replace engine oil filter
- Check transmission level
- Check fluid levels and requirements
- Start engine and check for leaks
- Degrease bilge area
